Dial-around? What does it mean?
Dial around was born with competition in
telecommunication industry. Before competition a customer did
not have a choice. After 1984 a customer could choose
(subscribe to) a default long distance carrier. From early
90's a customer does not have to pre-subscribe. He/she
can choose a long distance carrier on call-by-call basis. It
is how "dial-around" was born. Dial around numbers
usually start with 10-10 plus additional 3-4 digits.
Why one would want to do it?
The main reason is to use special rates that may be offered
to certain destinations. It's like going to a grocery
store and buying food that is on sale (Yes, it is
coming to telecommunication!). Check and compare often
and do not hesitate to change a carrier if it makes sense.
Companies
usually provide a choice of access numbers (some does not
require minimum calling time, some offer lower rates, but
charge at least for 10 minutes etc.). In addition
established companies like AT&T and MCI offer dial-around
under different brand names (for example Lucky Dog Company is
a dial-around brand for AT&T).
Ampol Telecom recommends
WorldXchange for dial-around services. You may use any
or all of their numbers depending on your needs. Some numbers
may have monthly service charge. For details click
